Contemporary Icons Discuss the Future

This year’s design shows and festivals have taken on a decidedly new look thanks to COVID-19, one that now lives in the digital realm. While the design community can’t currently gather in person to view the showcases, this new model allows for many more individuals to enjoy the talent on display. It also gives way to creating a new framework, new realities, practicalities and ethics for those who make a living within the design industry. But what does that look like? With the world resetting, now is the time to take on the challenge and find solutions.

FRAME founder and director Robert Thiemann recently led and moderated Dutch Design Week’s Contemporary Icons talk. Museum director and founder Jeroen van Mastrigt of museum Nowhere, international designer Sabine Marcelis, CEO of natural stone company SolidNature, David Mahyari, and artist Victor Sonna joined him. During the hour long discussion they explore what the world before COVID 19 was like, and how we can presently experience material tactility in a virtually driven society.
