Renovation tips from top interior designers

Planning a home improvement project can be overwhelming, but six interiors Instagrammers are sharing their top renovation tips to help inspire and motivate. From creating a moodboard to highlighting existing features, these renovators have learned valuable lessons along the way.

Starting with a Moodboard

Always start with a moodboard, as it helps bring structure to your vision, considering colours, textures, prints, plants, and accessories. Ideas often change as the space comes together.

Katie and Robin of @sweethomeketteringa advise not to settle for “it’ll do”. Instead, save for key pieces or take time to find the perfect item, as you’ll always think about the one that got away.

Bespoke Features and Furniture

Bespoke features and furniture are worth the investment, as standard furniture rarely fits perfectly. Neneh of @thelinentownhouse suggests considering bespoke pieces to create a timeless and sophisticated look.

A blank wall in an open-plan living space can be turned into a home library with custom shelving, making the most of tight spaces. Bespoke banquette seating can also optimise space and introduce a wow factor.

Neneh’s top tip is to be sure before adding panelling, as it’s difficult to remove without damaging plaster. Consider how it will affect the proportions of the space, especially in rooms with lower or angled ceilings.

Highlighting Existing Features

Mary of @my_renovating_diary advises thinking about highlighting existing features rather than hiding them. The best results come from working with the angles and character of a space.

Using tongue and groove panelling and an oak-effect beam can create a cottagecore feel. Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone with colour, as a well-chosen paint shade can transform a space.

A bold piece of artwork can anchor a room, add personality, and tie together softer furnishings. Trust your instinct and remember that homes feel most special when they reflect you, not just current trends.

Planning and Decorating

Lucy of @athomewithlucyj’s top tip is to dare to step outside your comfort zone when decorating with colour. One thing Jen of @march_on_magnolia learned is not to rush the planning stage, as living through a renovation can be disruptive.

Walk through your layout, open imaginary cupboards, and think about where you’ll put everyday items. Make sure you have space for everything, and consider which way cupboards will open, as these details make a difference.

Trust your instinct and remember that homes feel most special when they reflect you, not just current trends.
